History has been made tonight as running politician Wes Moore not only won Governor of Maryland but is the state’s first African-American governor. Ultimately it is a win for the general Black community.
In United States history, there have only been 6 Black governors, surprisingly even dating back to the late 1800s. Louisiana during this time period had two of the 6 Black governors with Oscar Dunn (1871) and P.B.S. Pinchback (1873).
It has been a long race for Governor Wes Moore, full name Westley Watende Omari Moore. At a young 44 years old, Moore has already accomplished quite a bit in his life including “a combat veteran, bestselling author, small business owner, Rhodes Scholar and former CEO of one of the nation’s largest anti-poverty organizations,” as stated on his website.
During his childhood, he lived in Maryland a short time. At a very young age his family moved to New York but by the time he was 14 years old, his family had moved back to Maryland. Maryland has always been home which is why he wanted to lead Maryland as their governor.
As governor, Wes Moore plans to use his term to improve multiple issues including gender equality, supporting seniors, and supporting reproductive rights for a few examples. His work background as a combat veteran will only support how he conducts state affairs in a positive direction.
Congratulations Wes Moore!
