Hopefully the sponsored trailer for “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” has probably hit your social media feed by now because we are excited about it. The new movie set to release this December is about the life and career of the late singer Whitney Houston. The movie is written by Anthony McCarten who also wrote Bohemian Rhapsody which was about the rise and fall of the famous band Queen.

Whitney became a superstar in the 1980s and had one of the most successful music careers in the world during her lifetime. To this day she is one of the top selling artists with over 200 million records sold across the globe. The singer had the biggest vocals and one of the most beautiful voices, hence her nickname “The Voice”. “I Wanna Dance with Somebody”, “I Have Nothing”, “I Will Always Love You”, and “Higher Love” are just a few songs she is most recognized for.

Music ran in Whitney’s family. Her mother and cousin were both legendary figures in American gospel, soul and pop music. Growing up she was around music and it became a passion of hers, however, she also had great looks and was discovered by a photographer at age 15 to start modeling. It was not until one evening at a nightclub she was discovered by Arista Records’ Clive Davis. In awe of her talent, Davis signed her to Arista Records and set her career to superstardom. The superstar quickly became a sensation across the globe, appearing even on television shows, movies such as “The Wiz”, and seen in may aspects of entertainment.

For the film The Bodyguard, Whitney covered Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” from 1974, and this turned into Houston’s biggest hit ever, spending a record-breaking 14 weeks atop the U.S. charts. The soundtrack album went on to win Houston three Grammys, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year. Later in the 1990s, Houston also starred in Waiting to Exhale and The Preacher’s Wife, both accompanied by hit soundtracks as well.

In 1992 she married music artist Bobby Brown. This was roughly 10 years into her career and also about the time when thing started to go downhill for her because of the lifestyle she had unfortunately been caught up in. Substance abuse became a part of her life and relationship with Brown soon became toxic as he was both emotionally and physically abusive to Whitney.

By the early 2000s her career was still booming because of the success she had already created but her personal life was more than challenging. Her family started the reality TV series Being Bobby Brown.  The show aired during the worst years of the couple’s crumbling marriage; drug use, lifestyle excess and bad behavior were all caught on tape and Houston’s reputation sunk to new lows. After the show, Houston attempted to repair her marriage and to break her drug habit, but had several relapses.

It truly is a tragedy that things never really got better and she ended up passing due to an overdose in February 2012. The upcoming film will show the “joyous, emotional, heartbreaking celebration of the life and music of Whitney Houston” as stated on IMDb.
